Councils. Edicts. Burnings. The canon wasn't divinely handed down — it was decided by committees with political agendas. Here's what didn't make the cut, and why.
The Book of Enoch was considered scripture by early Christians and is quoted directly in the New Testament's Book of Jude. It describes the Watchers — fallen angels who mated with human women and produced giants called the Nephilim. It was removed from the biblical canon at the Council of Laodicea in 363 AD.
Discovered in 1945 in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, the Gospel of Thomas contains 114 sayings attributed to Jesus — many of which have no parallel in the canonical gospels. It was buried around 367 AD, the same year Bishop Athanasius issued his famous Easter letter ordering the destruction of unauthorized texts.
Discovered in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls were the oldest known manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible. For 40 years, a small team of Catholic scholars controlled all access to the unpublished scrolls. Independent scholars were denied. When the embargo finally broke in 1991, the released texts complicated official doctrine.
In this Gnostic gospel, Judas is not a traitor — he is the only disciple Jesus trusted with the truth. Jesus asks Judas to betray him, because the crucifixion is necessary for the liberation of his divine spirit. The National Geographic Society authenticated it in 2006. The Vatican called it 'a lie.'
The Book of Jubilees retells Genesis and Exodus with precise dates, angelic hierarchies, and a calendar system that contradicts the one used by the Jerusalem Temple. It was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was excluded from the canon because its timeline made certain doctrines impossible to maintain.
Biblical scholars have long noted that Matthew and Luke share large blocks of identical text that don't appear in Mark. The leading explanation: both copied from a now-lost document called Q. If Q existed, it predates all four canonical gospels. No copy has ever been found.
In this 2nd-century text, Mary Magdalene is the disciple Jesus loved most, the one he entrusted with secret teachings. The 'reformed prostitute' narrative was introduced by Pope Gregory I in 591 AD — 500 years after her death.
Attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the Emerald Tablet is the foundational text of Western alchemy and Hermeticism. Its most famous line — 'As above, so below' — describes a cosmological principle that appears in Kabbalah, Gnosticism, and modern quantum physics. Isaac Newton translated it privately.
